Like women, diamond rings have many faces. Which one reflects her best? Get a picture of her in your mind. Do you see her when you look at a ring? That’s the one.
Wear it well. While women really are all about the sparkle, there is a practical side to them as well—especially when it comes to something they’re wearing every day, for the rest of their lives. So consider her lifestyle when you consider rings. Is she super-active, always on the go? Perhaps a low-set mounting that goes anywhere she does with ease. Does she work with her hands often? Perhaps a thicker band for more durability. And look at the style of any other rings she owns. Check out stone shape, ring style, metal color, etc.
Size counts. Are you looking for the perfect fit off the bat, or will she be all right with relinquishing her ring for resizing? How can you find her ring size without sacrificing the surprise? A few ideas from those who’s been there:

- Ask her mom/sister/best friend; if they don’t know, ask them to find out
- Take her shopping for her birthday/Valentine’s Day/your anniversary, let her try on and pick out an inexpensive-yet-sentimental ring in her size
