Where do natural diamonds come from?

Natural diamonds formed deep in the earth's mantle under extreme heat and pressure over a period of one to three billion years, then were carried toward the surface by volcanic activity. They are mined today in a handful of regions around the world, including parts of Africa, Canada, Russia, and Australia. That geological rarity is exactly what draws many people to them. A natural diamond is a genuinely ancient object, older than nearly anything else you will ever own. We hand select each of our natural diamonds for exceptional fire and brilliance.

What are the 4Cs of diamonds?

The 4Cs are the four characteristics used to evaluate a diamond: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Cut refers to how well the stone's facets are proportioned and how effectively it returns light, and it has the single largest effect on how much a diamond sparkles. Color grades how little tint a stone has, moving from colorless toward faint yellow. Clarity measures the presence of internal inclusions and surface blemishes. Carat is the stone's weight, not its size. The 4Cs work together rather than in isolation, and a well cut stone with a slightly lower color grade can easily outshine a poorly cut stone with a better one on paper. That is exactly why we prefer to show you diamonds side by side.

Why doesn't Flora Gems list loose diamonds online?

Because a screen cannot show you what a diamond actually does. Two stones with nearly identical certificates can look completely different in person, and no photograph captures how a diamond behaves in real light. We believe buying a diamond should be an experience rather than a transaction, so we hand select our loose stones and match them to you one at a time during a consultation in Decatur or Champaign. A diamond consultation is a one on one appointment with our team where we talk through what you are looking for, your budget, and the setting you have in mind, then show you loose stones that fit. You will see how cut, color, and clarity actually play out in person rather than on paper, and there is no pressure to decide that day. Consultations are available at both our Decatur and Champaign showrooms and can be booked through our appointment page or by giving us a call.

How do I care for my diamond jewelry?

Bring it in every six months. Complimentary cleaning and inspection is part of our Rock Solid Diamond Warranty, and it is the single most effective thing you can do to protect your jewelry. During an inspection we check that prongs are tight and settings are secure, which catches a loose stone long before it becomes a lost one. Between visits, keep your diamonds away from lotions and household chemicals, and store pieces separately so they do not scratch one another. A diamond can only be scratched by another diamond.
